Zafiline is a 26 year old lady whose life was dramatically transformed. The love of God was made tangible and real to her as she experienced the gift of surgery to remove the large tumor she had been carrying for the past five years. There were many people involved in caring for Zafiline and demonstrating this love to her. Obviously there were surgeons, physicians, operating room staff, nurses, lab techs, radiology techs, pharmacists as well as the less obvious; cleaners that kept the hospital sanitary, cooks that made nutritious food to help Zafiline recover well after surgery, engineers who maintained the ship, HR staff who filled all of these positions, chaplains who provided vital support to both crew and patients and teachers who taught the children of the aforementioned crew. All of these crew members from surgeons to cleaners are volunteers. Not only do they volunteer but they are also required to pay for their flights, board and living expenses whilst volunteering with Mercy Ships. This unique business model maximises the number of surgeries that Mercy Ships can perform as they do not have to pay salaries to the crew but instead all money can go directly towards helping patients.
I am currently raising support so that I can return to Madagascar in August 2015 and continue working as a nurse on the Screening Team; a small team that travels throughout the country to find and assess patients who are in need of life-changing surgery. The cost of flights, board and living expenses for my seven month commitment is $6 800. By providing financial support you are allowing me to continue my work of finding and assessing patients like Zafiline. Donations can be made at www.mercyships.org.au/donate and are fully tax detuctible. When asked what the donation is for you can enter my name (Naomi Reid) and the donation will then be used to cover my flights, board and living expenses. Or you can leave this question blank to make a general donation to the amazing work that Mercy Ships does.
I am incredibly grateful for your support - I cannot do this work without you.
